Mental health literacy refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage mental health conditions effectively. It encompasses knowledge about mental illnesses, their symptoms, causes, treatments, and ways to prevent or mitigate their impact (Osagie et al., 2023). In general hospital settings, where patients with a range of conditions, including mental health issues, are treated, nurses are often the first point of contact for individuals in need of care. As such, the level of mental health literacy among nurses in these settings is crucial for ensuring proper identification, referral, and care for patients with mental health conditions (Akpan & George, 2024).
In Lagos State, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) is one of the leading institutions that provide healthcare services, including mental health care. However, despite the critical role that nurses play in managing mental health conditions in these settings, there is limited research on the mental health literacy of nurses in general hospitals within the region. This study will assess the mental health literacy of nurses at LASUTH and explore the factors that influence their knowledge and attitudes toward mental health care.
In general hospital settings, many nurses are expected to provide care for patients with both physical and mental health conditions. However, a lack of adequate mental health training and awareness among nurses can lead to misdiagnosis, inadequate care, and stigma toward individuals with mental health disorders (Olayemi et al., 2024). At LASUTH, where patients with a variety of conditions are treated, mental health literacy among nurses is vital for providing comprehensive care. Yet, there is no clear understanding of how well nurses at LASUTH are equipped to handle mental health challenges. This study will address this gap by assessing the mental health literacy of nurses at LASUTH and identifying the need for further training and support.
This study focuses on nurses working at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and assesses their mental health literacy. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data, as nurses may overestimate their level of knowledge. Additionally, the study may not capture the full range of factors affecting mental health literacy across different hospital settings.
